Choosing a Retro Argentina Football Kit – A Look at 2 Famous Argentina Football Shirts From the Past

The blue and white stripes of those Argentina football shirts from the past are perhaps even as iconic as the yellow and blue kits of Brazil. That is why the retro Argentina football kit is so sought after these days, especially Argentina football shirts from the seventies and eighties.

Diego Maradona the manager has really struggled to get his Argentinean team to qualify for this year’s World Cup finals, in South Africa. At one point during qualification it looked like the unthinkable might happen and that the World’s biggest football competition would be without one of its most flamboyant teams. Thankfully, that was not the case, but nonetheless the current side does not appear to be the force that it was when Maradona the player was the star of the team.

Below we look at two famous Argentina football shirts from the past, from a time when the “La Albiceleste” were the best team in the world.

Argentina 1978 World Cup Shirt

The Argentina 1978 World Cup strip is a retro Argentina football kit from one of the most memorable tournaments of all. Argentina were on home soil and so were well fancied, however, they were up against the “total football” of the Dutch, who were extremely unlucky in the 1974 World Cup and were expected to win it this time round.

The final between Argentina and Holland was a classic, with Johan Cruyff the star of the show. However, Argentina had their stars too, including Ossie Ardiles, just before his groundbreaking transfer to Tottenham Hotspur later that summer. They also had Mario Kempes, who was the leading goal scorer in the 1978 tournament, scoring a total of six goals, including two in the final itself.

Argentina managed to beat Holland 3-1 after extra time to win the World Cup and ensure that the 1978 World Cup shirt would become one of the most iconic Argentina football shirts of all time.

Argentina 1986 World Cup Shirt

The Argentina 1986 World Cup strip is another retro football kit featuring the famous blue and white stripes. It is nearly always associated with one man, a football genius who practically single-handedly won Argentina their second World Cup. That man of course was Diego Maradona and it is partly because of those performances wearing that particular retro Argentina football kit that he is considered by many to be the greatest footballer that ever lived.

These vintage football shirts have such a classic look to them and really do look great with a pair of jeans and trainers. As well as the classic blue and white stripes, the retro football kit features the gold and blue Argentinean shield.

Men’s Shirts – Hello Mister Bond

“Hello, Mr. Bond.”

James bond in his crisp white shirt is the epitome of style and confidence. Men’s shirts are a way to break out of the office doldrums and really show your own creative genius. Make your shirts a real statement about your style. Dark rich colours with contrasting light coloured ties; a monochromatic combination of light sexy baby blue or powder pink with perfectly matching tie; the 100% cotton white shirt with pearl buttons and sophisticated top stitching all make a statement when you walk into the room. What ever it is that you want to communicate; think about it, find your groove and make a splash. Cheer up the girls in the office with your dapper ways.

“Made it, Ma! Top of the World.”

Changing your style is one way to get noticed in an increasingly competitive job market. Your jacket is the frame and the men’s shirt the matting that will enhance artwork contained within it. The shirt works to frame the tie, braces (which are underwear) and the face. What colours will enhance these features? Look at the whole picture and determine what story you want the viewer to participate in. Sometimes the shirt can be the artwork; attention to detail in fabric, colour, design, print, top stitching and collar are like the brush details on a fine painting. The suit and tie then ground and frame the art, which is the shirt and should not compete with it.

“Hasta la vista, baby.”

As a minimum a man should have at least 3 white shirts and 2 blue. This gives us 5 shirts and we can do the laundry on the weekend. If you plan to work through most weekends or travel extensively for business or pleasure. Invest in more. The more shirts you have the less frequently you have to do laundry or make it to the dry cleaners.

“Well it’s not the men in your life that count, it’s the life in your men.”

Colour, fabric and style of collar and cuff will tell a story about the man and the shirt. Buy the best quality fabric that you can, the smoother and finer the cotton the dressier the man’s shirt. Choose a collar that suits your face and body frame and make sure that the cuffs fit properly. The cuffs of a man’s shirt should not slide off over the wrist nor should they get stuck when you lift your arms up in the air.

“Love your shirt.”

Finally, make sure that the shirt fits. Measure and try on before buying. Do not purchase men’s shirts in plastic bags with the pins still in. Take it out and try it on. Make sure that the fit is not too tight or too big through the torso. The current fashion is a little more tailored and fitted through the upper body.

“You had me at Hello.”

Men’s shirts make a statement. Think about the leading men in film, remembering their most famous roles it is easy to picture the shirt that each was wearing. What do you want to be remembered for? Find a style that really makes you feel like a leading man in your own life.

Marketing $500 Shirts – Who – and Where – Are the Men Who Wear Them?

Hey, guys, when was the last time you wore a $500 dress shirt? Can you also remember where you bought it? Where it was you wore it to? What the occasion was? Better yet, can you remember why you paid $500 for a shirt – yes, just one – in the first place?

Asking $500 for just one shirt takes gall, lots of gall. Being able to get that $500 asking price is a stroke of marketing genius. What kind of story must one tell to convince a grown man to part with $500 for a single shirt. But consider this: To afford such luxury, that buyer has got to be earning a king’s ransom, at least the mid-six figures a year. At least. And dummies don’t earn that kind of money, right? Or do they?

Why would anyone – except for perhaps the less intellectually endowed – pay $500 for a single shirt? Apparently, for a lot of guys, the answer – at least until recently – has been, “Because I can afford it.”

Most guys I know, if they had $500 they could afford to part with, would not spend it on a shirt. Certainly not on just one shirt. Uno. The most elementary of numbers. A single, solitary, individual shirt. For 500 smackers?

But, obviously, there are lots of guys who, ’til recently, shelled out that kind of money for a single shirt. Hard times being what they’ve become, however, it appears the number of such guys has decreased drastically…much to the dismay of a 125-year old Texas-based custom shirt-maker that charges that price – and gets it.

Imagine charging prices that outrageous for 125 years. I want to meet the marketing guru who dreamed up that scheme. Or scam? No, you know what it is, what explains it all? It’s Texas. It’s got to be, because in Texas they do everything in a very big way.

While most guys I know would end up with two dozen shirts for 500 bananas – if they had it to spend on shirts – I’d like to get into the minds of the guys who actually part with 500 fine for just one shirt.

I want to know what they were told is so special about their shirts. Could it be the label – the one that says “Custom Tailored For Another Rich Chump.” It’s probably sewn someplace on the outside of their shirt, right? High priced things always come with labels on the outside.

Gee, now I feel really bad for the guys I know who wear their J. C. Penney or Sears labels actually touching their skin. Ugh! How gross that must feel.

Someday I want to meet this shirt-maker, the guy whose company makes and sells those $500 shirts. I want to pick his brain, learn his marketing secrets. I want to discover what it is he tells his customers to make them willingly part with 500 shekels for a single shirt. Now that’s marketing, baby!

George Best, The Greatest Player to Don the Manchester United Shirt

George Best was undoubtedly the most naturally gifted player to ever wear the famous Manchester United Shirt. Even though Best self-destructed and destroyed his own career in the saddest of manners, he is considered by many to be the greatest footballer of all time. If he had not taken the path of drinking and generally abusing his body, one can only speculate the legacy he would have created. Like Paul Gascoigne years later, Best’s potential was never fully realised.

George Best was born on 22nd May 1946 in the Cregagh area of Belfast. He led an unremarkable early childhood and although he was never without his ball, he was considered to small to ever consider a career in the game, despite his obvious ability. However he was eventually spotted by Bob Bishop, the Manchester United scout. Bishop was so captivated by Best’s talent that he sent a telegram to Matt Busby claiming to have found a genius. Following a trial, he was signed by Manchester United and turned professional shortly thereafter.

George Best played at Manchester United for six seasons and scored 115 goals. His debut was against West Bromwich Albion aged just 17. Best was part of a deadly trio made up of himself, Dennis Law and Bobby Charlton. Too much for their opponents, Manchester United swept to 2 league titles and a European Cup, beating Benfica 4-1 in the final. It was 1967 and Best was voted European Player Of The Year.

Best’s prodigious footballing talent coupled with his good looks made him the darling of the media in the same way that David Beckham has done in recent years. Off-field distractions soon started mounting up such as personal appearances, modeling contracts and nightclub ownerships. Best started to enjoy a hedonistic lifestyle and began drinking heavily. This started the the inexorable decline of his professional career. One of Best’s most famous quotes is his response when asked what he had done with all his money?”, which was: “I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered.”

George Best walked out on Manchester United for the last time in 1974 aged just 27. His last game was against QPR on the 1st of January. He made 470 appearances scoring 179 goals in all competitions. He was Manchester United’s leading goalscorer for six consecutive seasons.

On the 25th November 2005, George Best died aged 59. He suffered organ failure at the Cromwell Hospital in London after failing to stop drinking following his 2002 transplant. He was given immuno-supressant drugs to stop his body rejecting the transplanted liver. This obviously laid him open to new infections.

George Best will be remembered as a genius of the beautiful game who wasted his natural talent to drink. His dazzling appearances in a Manchester United shirt are what he will be most remembered for. His loyal Irish fans perhaps summed him up best when they said : “Maradona good; PelĂ© better; George Best.”

3 Reasons Not to Wear Wrinkle-Free Dress Shirts

I was stunned yesterday, when a colleague of mine mentioned the “genius” of wrinkle-free shirts. Now, I know what he meant — for men who are as busy as we are, few things seem less important than ironing a shirt. But we’re men, not slobs, so the wrinkle-free shirt seems like an obvious choice. That is, of course, if you want to waste time and money.

The truth is, wrinkle-free shirts will not last and they pose some serious health risks. At the end of the day, they will cost more money to replace and more time at the doctor’s diagnosing possible diseases. They are far from “genius.”

Consider the following when you shop for your next dress shirt:

1. The Quality of the Shirt is Decreased.
Take a wrinkle-free “100% cotton” shirt and put it next to a classic man’s dress shirt. First, notice the difference in the color intensity. When cotton is treated with chemicals to make it wrinkle-free, the rich color of the original dye is dulled and faded.

Second, notice the difference in texture. They don’t even both feel like cotton. There’s a reason that cotton has been used for thousands of years for fine clothing: it is comfortable, breathable, and looks great. In order to make a dress shirt non-iron, the cotton has to be treated to the point that it’s barely classifiable as cotton. The fabric doesn’t breathe anymore.

2. Non-Iron Shirts Don’t Last.
When the cotton has been treated with so many chemicals, it’s just not as durable. Aside from that, you know that wrinkle-freeness that made you buy the shirt in the first place? Well, that doesn’t last either.

Every time you wash your non-iron shirts, some of those wrinkle-removing chemicals wash out too. Depending on how intensely the cotton has been treated, the wrinkles may start showing up in just a few washes. I’ll also add that if you’re going to send your shirts to the laundry anyway, there isn’t much point in the non-iron property (which is going to decrease faster with professional laundering as well).

3. Wrinkle-Free Fabric May Actually Harm You.
I know this sounds far-fetched, but I’m serious. Those chemicals I’ve been mentioning? One of those used is formaldehyde — a known carcinogen. The more you pry into what makes a wrinkle-free shirt, the more it should concern you. They can cause skin problems, and even the vapors inhaled while wearing the shirts could be dangerous! Not worth the risk, in my opinion.

The truth is, the word “genius” is used too often. What is “genius” about taking a perfectly good shirt, dousing it in dangerous chemicals, and selling it to the masses? Next time, buy a classic cotton dress shirt, have it ironed, and leave the wrinkle-free for the sale racks.

7 Free-Cheap Things to Raise Genius Children

1) Breastfeed. Studies show that at the age of six children who were breastfed for six months or more score an average of 6 points higher on IQ tests than formula fed children. And breast milk is FREE. Formula costs a family on low income a great deal of money…and it limits your child’s mental capabilities.

2) Talk. From about 26 weeks a foetus can hear in the womb. Studies have also shown that children who were talked to in the womb and as babies have better verbal skills. One of the easiest ways to accomplish this is to give your child a running commentary on your activities. “We need to give you a bath now. Let’s take your little pink shirt off. Out come your arms. Now let’s pull it over your head.” I have gotten a few strange looks on the Tube of course, but my daughter’s intelligence is more than worth it.

3) Let them explore. We have all heard the expression…kids will be kids. But often one of a baby’s first words is “No,” because they hear it so often. Clearly some things like sticking things in electrical outlets must be “No,” but other things can be made safe for your child. For instance, our lower kitchen cabinets are always child proof. We keep the plastic ware and canned foods in them. It is a skill that I learned from my great-grandmother. Even as an adult, I fondly remember sitting on her kitchen floor surrounded by cans of food. I would build towers. I would play store. Those cans were wonderful FREE toys…and it allowed me as a child to safely explore the adult world. As parents/carers our job is to create a safe world in which to allow our children to explore…and learn.

4) Test their limits. We never learn what we are capable of accomplishing if we are not allowed to try. It is natural for parents/carers to want to protect their children, but sometimes by watchful waiting we can allow them to develop a sense of accomplishment. My daughter could ‘climb’ the stairs before she walked. We of course had safety gates at the top and the bottom so that she never could attempt this new skill without the watchful eye of an adult, but we often would put her down at the bottom and allow her to crawl them. We were only a step or two behind of course should something go wrong. She has taken that same determination into other tasks as well…tackling the jungle gym at the ripe old age of two.

5) Expand their horizons. In most large UK and US cities there is an abundance of exciting and educational activities for young children. Living in London, we are lucky that our museums are FREE. But even when we lived in the US, we found that by purchasing annual memberships to the local zoos and museums we could provide the relatively cheap entertainment for the whole family. The Los Angeles Zoo for instance offered a family membership for around $50 that admits 2 adults and up to 4 children under 18. Most US attractions have similar offers. If even this paltry amount is too much for your tight budget, we have asked for memberships as gifts from grandparents.

6) Read. You can never begin reading too soon…even before birth your child can hear you. As small babies, brightly coloured cardboard books that they can touch and even chew are wonderful. Older babies and toddlers enjoy books with flaps or texture which they can touch and explore for themselves. My 2 year old loves to ‘read’ her picture books to Mummy now. And don’t forget the value of your child seeing you read. Our daughter often demands her own ‘paper’ on Saturday morning as she eats breakfast and reads along side Daddy. If she sees me reading on the couch, she often brings an arm load of her own books for me to read to her.

7) Listen and learn. Sometimes as parents we forget that our children have a great deal to teach us as well. Their open and loving attitude has much to teach adults, who can so easily get caught up in inconsequential tasks. One of my fondest memories was the sheer joy of jumping in a puddle with my daughter. To enjoy such priceless moments we must take the time to listen to our children with our hearts as well as our ears. We must also free ourselves from fears and convention to realise just how much we have to learn from these little treasures.

Terri O’Neale is the mother of six; ranging in age from 3 to 22. She has been both a working and stay-at-home mother at various times in her life. She was also a single mother for almost five years, before re-marrying the love of her life at the age of forty. Obviously, she has a life-time of training in raising a family on a tight budget. In addition to these real life experiences, she possesses a bachelors degree in health education and a minored in environmental management in her masters programme.

Terri feels strongly that this is one of the most challenging times in history for the family, but she also believes that families with the will and resolve to address the pressing issues of saving money, becoming greener, leading healthier lifestyles and spending more time with one another can endure these challenging times and come out victorious in the end.
